Synopsis
An ageless provincial setting with no particular charm, an archaeological dig, an accident, an alcoholic mother, a stubborn young researcher who is at first musters all her strength to ignore her attraction to the famous researcher sent to supervise her and evaluate her work. This is no ordinary first feature Béatrice Pollet’s film does not echo the contemporary French film scene. Her strength lies beyond story telling, romance, coming of age, despite all these ingredients being present here. Her work is grounded to some extent in its muffled steps, the invention of what can rightly be called a poem. The poetry of the edit, first and foremost, which breathes life into the underbelly of the film, from today to yesterday , and further back in time, from sadness to love through the grace of a visual or aural ryhme, a veil, a fabric, a breath. No sign of the times is palpable in the acting or beauty of the leading lady Joséphine de Meaux, nor in the décor or atmosphere. Le jour de la grenouille is timeless. The love itself, at first unlikely, then irresistible, between Anna and Peter – Patrick Catalifo, who turns in his best performance – becomes a possibility or a suspension of time, something that must be unearthed with meticulous care, in case it turns to dust the moment it comes into contact with fresh air.
