Synopsis
Christine Laurent is a filmmaker: Eden Miseria (1988), Transatlantique (1996), Call Me Agostino (2006). She has also worked as a script writer on a number of Jacques Rivette’s films, and not just any films : La Bande des quatre (1989), La Belle Noiseuse (1991), Jeanne La Pucelle (1994), Va savoir (2001), Ne touchez pas à la hache (2007)… She started out as a costume designer, notably alongside René Allio. None of the details of this brief CV is utterly indispensible, but none is superfluous in order for us to understand the atmosphere of Demain ? the question mark is critical: although the film tells the true story of a writer, it does not retrace her life from start to finish, but shows how a young woman, Delmira Agustini, is bound up in the pleasure, trance and terror of writing and the freedom that it gives her in Montevideo at the turn of the 20th century, just before the outbreak of the First World War. Happy times and inspiration, writers’ block and life crises, embraces and ceremonies, laughter and drama – Demain ? is a story that wavers between fantasy and tragedy, rise and fall, French and Portuguese, modern cinema and classic film and cinema that is emerging and re-emerging – thanks to an ending that rolls the dice again for a new game.
